HOUSING

I am from the design community. I will help increase awareness of design in Portland, help more school kids get involved in design, and help Portland's economy by making Portland more of a design capital. The design community will have a passionate advocate in City Hall with me as a commissioner.

Design is a huge part of Portland’s livability, quality of life, and economy. We have an amazing base for design in Portland, with national level and international level companies. Let's grow our design sector!

Growing more 'homegrown' talent. Many of our top design companies have to look outside of Portland for much of their design talent. I want to work with business and schools to grow more design talent in our schools and colleges. We can get more kids of color involved, we can help grow more of our next generation into well paying jobs.

Design Week. Our 4th annual Design Week is scheduled in April 2016. I fully support Design Week and will help support it as commissioner in City Hall.

Design Capital / Economy. We can do far more to market our design economy, grow it, and create more well-paying jobs for many of us. Our Design Festivals started to do that, they exposed the huge design talent in Portland to the outside world, and we should do that again. I am committed to helping grow our design sector, and grow opportunities to participate in design for more people across Portland.

Urban Design. Portland has a reputation for being a national leader in Urban Design. Many believe we are living 'off the fumes' of this honor, we have fallen far short in the last several decades. Many projects get watered down by the lack of leadership on City Council. As one of Portland's leading urban designers, I will refocus our urban design efforts to build the vision. To build excellence. To build a livable and inspiring city.

Coming up we have tremendous opportunities to excel, or make Portland more sterile and mediocre. The Post Office site, the Rose Quarter, Centennial Mills, downtown, our 'Corridors' (main streets such as SE Division and N. Williams), transit oriented design, Parks, outer eastside. It's huge, and we need someone on City Council who has a major urban design background. I even won a special citation from the AIA for design excellence for one of my Portland projects.

Building Design (architecture). Portland is going to see unprecedented growth, and the design of buildings is going to have a huge impact on downtown and our neighborhoods. Having a design oriented person on City Council is unprecedented, and perfect for this time in Portland's history. I will absolutely focus on the design of our built environment to help try to keep Portland beautiful and livable.
